Status Report: February

Sitting…on the couch.

Wishing…this headache would go away.

Thankful…that though my headaches are technically migraines (I get auras and everything), they’re not debilitating like a lot of people’s migraines are. But ow! Pain!

Sorry…that this status report started with me whining. I’ll try to do better.

Reading…The Distant Hours and Excellent Women. Both good.

Wondering…if you’ll notice that both those books were mentioned recently by Lisa on her blog. I seem to read everything she tells me to. Maybe I should have her tell me to clean my office today.

Enjoying…the sunshine. It’s been so warm here lately. I guess the warm days are nice, but it’s supposed to be winter now. I have a feeling we’ll pay for this mild weather later by having winter weather in March or April.

Thinking…about a book I finished a few days ago called The Borrower (not to be confused with the children’s book about miniature people). I hope to review it soon, but need to think through some things first.

Hearing…my washer beep at me. Time to move a load to the dryer.

Deciding…to get on with the day.

Status Report

Sitting…in the living room, on the couch.

Drinking…coffee.

Listening…to acorns hitting the roof as they fall off the oak tree outside my front window.

Anticipating…the end of Daylight Savings Time this weekend. The sun doesn’t come up until after seven o’clock these days, and I’m weary of it. I think I could handle the sun setting in early afternoon if I didn’t have to get up in the dark.

Reading…Jesus + Nothing = Everything by Tullian Tchividjian. I meant to have this finished and reviewed by Monday, but I got distracted by the World Series.

Also reading…Hammer of God by Bo Giertz. I first read about this book in this post by Justin Taylor. The last few fiction books I’ve tried lately have been duds, so it was nice to find this.

Thinking…that the next few months will be quite busy. Oldest son turns 15 in a couple of weeks. Two of my kids’ birthdays fall in the midst of the holiday season. Then the rush of gearing up again in school in January, plus a busy spring with trips and speaking…and all the other stuff I normally do…I’m probably not going to get to catch my breath until June. At least it’s a fun kind of busy.

Thankful…for two exceptionally nice things to look forward to. A big family gathering over Thanksgiving, and Together for the Gospel in April. Can’t wait for either one!

Wishing…that The Gospel Coalition Women’s Conference was also on the schedule, but I don’t see that happening right now.

Noticing…that my allotted computer time is nearly over. I must go.

Status Update

Sitting… on the couch.

Listening… to my youngest son fidget in his seat. It’s hard to sit still and do subtraction at the same time.

Waiting… on the handyman who was supposed to be here an hour ago. We had a pipe burst in the wall a ways back, and while the pipe was repaired right away, we still need to have the drywall replaced.

Wondering… why we have so much trouble getting people to do work for us. I know everyone deals with late repairmen, but we have had some doozies. I had one man promise me he would come and do some work “by the end of the week” for six weeks straight. Finally I called his wife and started to cry (didn’t intend to talk to his wife — she just answered the phone. And I didn’t mean to cry, either; it just happened.) He came the next day. He wasn’t happy with me and still looks the other way when I run into him around town.

Anticipating… tonight’s baseball game. Will this be the end of the Cardinals’ season, or will they continue to the NLCS…and then on to the World Series?

Deciding… which project to tackle on Saturday. The garage or the office? Both are in a sorry state. The weather will probably decide for me.

Reading…Lit! by Tony Reinke. I just got started, but I think I’m going to like it.

Also reading…Hannah Coulter: A Novel (Port William) by Wendell Berry. This is the first Wendell Berry book I’ve ever read, and I’m thinking I should have started reading his books years ago.

Hoping… that the dogs don’t get too restless. We put them in their kennel because we thought the drywall guy was coming. I can tell they’re getting restless. This may be a long day.

Realizing… that the fidgeting at the kitchen table has now become rolling the pencil back and forth. Guess I better get up and help somebody refocus.

Status Report: September

Sitting…on the couch.

Waiting…for the burrito I’m having for lunch to finish cooking (in the microwave). You know you’ve hit a nutritional low when you’re eating a microwave burrito for lunch.

Hoping…to get the laundry caught up today. It’s like spinning plates around here during the school year. Clean laundry is usually the first thing to give.

Thankful…that the new school year is going well for both the homeschool and public school kids in the house.

Anticipating…seeing family this weekend.

Reading…Words Made Fresh: Essays on Literature and Culture by Larry Woiwode. I hope to have a review of it up tomorrow. Thought provoking about a lot of things that I care about.

Also reading…The latest issues of Runner’s World and Books and Culture (Okay, technically not reading them yet, but they’re here waiting for me. Oh, I’ve also been reading some of Calvin’s Commentaries. He was no slouch, that John Calvin.

Glad…that I can stay home tonight. Too many evenings away make Staci want to curl up in her quilt and stay home.

Preparing…for our church’s women’s retreat. I’m speaking on “Viewing Our Struggles through the Lens of the Gospel.” I probably have about six hours worth of material. I need to cull it down to three 30 minute talks. Wish me luck. Or pray for me. That would be better.

Status Report: July

Sitting… in the office. But I was tempted to run upstairs and sit on the couch in order to have a different answer.

Drinking… water. I’ve finished my coffee for the day.

Missing… my mama. She’s sick, and I don’t like that (she likes it even less than I do).

Returning…to a more regular schedule. The aimlessness of summer is wearing on us all (even though the kids don’t realize it). We may return to the pool this afternoon, though. I don’t want to jettison the summer schedule completely just yet.

Reading… Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. I’m relieved to be enjoying it so much, since I have been pretty disappointed in most of the fiction I’ve read for the last year or so. It was recommended by Magistra Mater. I had never heard of Wallace Stegner until now, but he’s won both a Pulitzer and a National Book Award, so obviously I should have.

Also reading… Consequences of Ideas by R.C. Sproul.

Loving… that I’ve enjoyed two fiction books in a row.

Pretending…that I’m not proscrastinating. I am planning on running today, but I keep telling myself that I should finish this post first.

Wondering… how I’m going to answer a question that just landed in my inbox.

Watching… Cardinal baseball. (Not right this minute, obviously, but I have been lately.) Theodore has taken to yelling at the television. We can’t decide if they’re not as good as we thought they were, or if they’re a good team that’s doing a lousy job.

Anticipating… fireworks on Sunday night.

Stressing… about not being with my mom. I’m too far away to just dash over for the afternoon, but close enough to consider it. She wants me to stay put, though, so I’ll obey. But only because my sisters are there.

Praying… for lots of people.

Remembering… how difficult it is to parent toddlers (pertaining to the question in the inbox).

Realizing… that every season of life is challenging. But God is faithful.
