Ode to the Laptop

I knew this day was coming. Theodore had warned me that her days were numbered. He said that if anything important remained stored on her hard drive, I better back it up soon.

And last night it came to pass. I tried to turn on the laptop. She coughed and wheezed, but nothing happened.

The laptop, she is no more. We had some good times, she and I. We wrote some of my favorite blog posts together. And even though the past few years I had largely forsaken her for the desktop in the office with the nifty two-monitor setup, I never forgot her. She was perfect for reading blogs with while watching TV.

Seven years. I’m not sure how to convert laptop years to human years, but I think that makes her quite elderly.

I thought we could take a little walk down memory lane, remembering some of the good times.

Like in April 2006. It’s appropriately titled Uh, Honey? About Your Laptop. Quite a title, no? I’m wondering if it’s too late to change the title of the book to something like, Um, Yeah. About That Problem With Organization. I’ll be sure and run it by the guys at Cruciform.

The pictures pretty much say it all:

At his old job, Theodore’s boss spent a fair amount of time one day trying to fix this from old laptop keys they had lying around (it appears that computer guys keep boxes of various and sundry laptop pieces). Anyway, he was unsuccessful. Anytime I had to type a “z”, I had to press really hard with my pinky. It’s a good thing I have small hands. And that I’m not named Zelda.

An then there’s October 2006. Apparently, 2006 was a very bad year for this laptop. Scene From the Living Room (No pictures. Just the story.)

There’s Treadmill Running Primer from October 2007:

I got a lot of grief for that picture. Trust me when I say the laptop was not balanced as precariously at it looks. It really was on there quite firmly. Theodore even tested it out and gave the OK.

It’s clear that she was actually in more danger if I carried her across the living room.

Thanks for the memories.
